Why does finger nails peel in layers? Is it a lack of a mineral ?

I have always had this problem, even if I apply nail polish it does not last 3 days....perhaps a bit more with varnish....why does it leave the nail top layers. Why does finger nails peel in layers? Is it a lack of a mineral ?
i was told it was lack of calcium but maybe best to ask docWhy does finger nails peel in layers? Is it a lack of a mineral ?
Probably a lack of calcium and vitamin D in your diet. You can get a nail enricher/strengthener that is in polish form that will help. Also, try Biotin (pill) that will help keep nails and hair healthy.
Malnutrition. I'd suggest taking a daily multivitamin before your hair starts falling out in clumps.

And yes, malnutrition can occur if you eat normally.

The way your hair, nails, and skin appear usually reflects your overall health on the inside. Eat a well balanced diet full of fresh fruits and veggies don't forget your lean meats like fish and poultry. Try not to put too many chemicals on your nails some can do more harm than good. Focus on fixing the problem from the inside out.

here's a website that might help you. http://au.health.yahoo.com/041101/25/1uzn.html?r=967673065
